The Dangers of a Mouse or Rat Infestation

Rodents like mice and rats are known for their ability to adapt and reproduce rapidly. In your home, this can mean that one or two rodents quickly turn into ten or more, which can lead to a variety of problems:

  • Disease Transmission: Rodents can carry and transmit diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, and salmonellosis, posing health risks to humans and pets through their droppings, urine, and bites.
  • Property Damage: Rodents are prolific chewers and can gnaw through wiring, insulation, wood, and other materials, causing structural damage and fire hazards.
  • Food Contamination: Rodents contaminate food storage areas and pantries, potentially leading to foodborne illnesses.
  • Reproduction: Rodents reproduce quickly, with a single pair capable of producing dozens of offspring in a year, leading to rapid infestations.

What are Signs of Rodents in Your Home?

How do you know if you have rats or mice in your house, crawlspace, or yard? They can be difficult to detect because rodent entry points can easily go unnoticed. Mice can even gain entry through holes as small as ¼” around.

Here are a few other signs of rodent activity to look out for:

  • ¼’ holes in foundation vents (The vents around the bottom of the outside of your home)
  • Open space underneath weather stripping or around water/gas lines
  • Holes chewed in bathroom and kitchen cabinets
  • Produce items with multiple bites but not fully consumed
  • Scratching, chewing, or rustling at night
  • Oval-shaped dark black feces-a grain of small rice in size or smaller
